Acura MDX

Overall Score - 8.6 (Very Good)

The MDX delivers one of the best combinations of spaciousness, stellar safety and smooth handling in its class. If you're in the market for a luxury midsize SUV, you should also consider the Infiniti FX or Land Rover LR3 .

Reviewers agree the 2007 Acura MDX is a luxurious and performance-minded family vehicle. Introduced in 2001, the SUV gets a major exterior redesign for this year that positions it against upscale competition like the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cayenne. Reviewers are generally impressed with the exterior and performance improvements. "Comparing the performance of an Acura MDX to that of a BMW X5 3.0i or a Porsche Cayenne V6 might seem ludicrous. And it would have been until now," says Edmunds. In fact, the MDX is so well-liked that Edmunds named it the "Most Wanted SUV Under $45,000" and it's a Consumer Guide "Best Buy."  In a comparison test, Car and Driver rated the MDX Sport the best in a field of eight other luxury SUVs.

Edmunds calls the MDX a "good value for the dollar." As for resale value, Kelley Blue Book, expects the MDX "to perform better even than the excellent, but aging, Lexus RX 350." IntelliChoice gives the MDX a value rating of "excellent" for its predicted five-year total cost of ownership, compared to other vehicles in its class.

The MDX comes in only one trim, but there are three option packages available -- the Technology Package, the Sport Package, and the Entertainment Package (which requires one or both of the other packages) -- which all tack on a few thousand dollars.

MDX Performance - 8.6 (Very Good)

Acura has opted for more sports-car-like power and handling in the 2007 MDX, courtesy of a new V6 engine and Super-Handling All Wheel Drive. "The 300-horsepower V6 engine, a hefty 19 percent more muscular than last year's model, lets you race up to highway speed or pass that truck in the right-hand lane in an instant," says U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman. continue

MDX Exterior - 7.0 (Good)

Reviews are mixed on the 2007 Acura MDX's styling. Most find it pleasing and even innovative, but a few think it's off-putting. "Longer, lower and wider than the more conservative-looking model it replaces, the 2007 MDX's sculpted exterior is both bolder and richer-looking," says Forbes. continue

MDX Interior - 7.9 (Good)

The consensus on the newly restyled interior of the 2007 Acura MDX is that designers got it right with comfortable seating and a stylish appearance. The SUV's three rows of seats can hold seven passengers, but most writers find the three seats in the back row suitable only for children. continue

MDX Safety - 9.8 (Excellent)

Reviewers by and large feel that the MDX is a safe way to get on the highway, and government crash test scores confirm that view. In fact, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety named the 2007 model a "Top Safety Pick" for its good performance in front side, and rear tests and for its standard electronic stability control. continue

MDX Reliability - 4.0 (Mediocre)

The 2007 Acura MDX reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS). Buyers can rest assured that the MDX comes with Acura's standard four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty. continue
