BMW X3

Overall Score - 7.5 (Good)

The X3 delivers very competitive all-wheel drive performance, though some may find its suspension a little too stiff and the price high for its class. Exterior styling is becoming dated, but the interior is widely seen as comfortable and of BMW-level quality. Buyers might also consider the Acura RDX for a lower price or the Land Rover LR2 for better off-road performance.

On balance, critics find the 2007 BMW X3 to be an excellent performer, delivering the drive, ride and handling you'd expect for an SUV from BMW. Kelley Blue Book says that the X3 "successfully [weds] SUV attributes (aggressive tall-wagon look, utility, all-weather security, 'command' seating position) to BMW attributes of performance and fun-to-drive handing agility." Edmunds praises its "outstanding power delivery" and "undeniable quality."

Auto testers comment that the crossover X3 offers exceptional handling, with AutoWeek noting "the X3 is still one of the best-driving SUVs on the market, thanks to accurate steering and committed cornering responses," though a number of critics felt the suspension was a little on the hard side. The cabin "is one of its strong points" according to BusinessWeek and Edmunds calls the interior "well thought out and beautifully executed." However, the exterior of the X3, never a strong favorite with critics, prompts Car and Driver to call it "dated."

All of that performance and quality doesn't come cheap. The BMW X3 costs thousands more than its closest competitor, and a loaded X3 can easily push against the $50,000 mark. About.com reports that "at the base price of $38,000, the level of standard equipment feels a little skimpy. There are certainly other vehicles to consider in this class." BusinessWeek sums it up by saying, "It handles well but is too expensive and too small. Why not buy a BMW coupe instead and have more fun?" For true Bimmer aficionados, though, Automobile Magazine says, "At least you'll get good bloodlines for the money."

X3 Exterior - 6.0 (Mediocre)

The 2007 X3 is seen by most as a modest freshening of the three-year-old vehicle's basic design, which is beginning to show its age. Automotive.com says it has a "BMW-like, road-grabbing face," but Car and Driver comments that the X3's "wedgy, angular flanks look even more dated." continue

X3 Interior - 7.9 (Good)

Most critics praise the overall comfort, layout, and materials in the X3, noting that it is nicely upgraded from the prior model. Many note that the small SUV interior now seems to be of the same quality of materials and fit of other BMWs. BusinessWeek calls it "well-made and elegant." continue

X3 Safety - NA

Neither the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety nor the federal government has crash tested the 2006 or 2007 BMW X3. At the same time, the luxury SUV is "replete with safety features, both active and passive," according to Automotive.com. continue
