Buick Rainier Exterior Review

Exterior - 7.4 (Good)

Reviewers don't dislike the exterior styling of the Rainier so much as they find it uninspired. Though distinguished in minor ways from its GMC and Chevrolet brethren, it has a look that many reviewers think is due for an update. U.S. News' Rick Newman says, "It's not ugly, but the Rainier is big and bulky and familiar at that."

Kelley Blue Book says the "Rainier's TrailBlazer/Envoy roots are clearly visible," but adds that "Buick has massaged the Rainier's exterior sufficiently to give the vehicle its own identity." This identity is informed by the Buick brand. AutoMedia.com claims that a " glance at the front end reveals the Buick heritage is evident, centered on an oval grille with a long row of vertical bars, surrounding a tri-shield badge."

AutoWeek points out that the Rainier is "distinguished from its GM bedfellows by a horizontal crease at the beltline extending from headlight to tail and by the Buick vertical-bar grille." The Auto Channel finds, "Car-type complex headlights under aerodynamic fairings and character lines in the hood" give "the impression of fender lines" and "add to the upscale, carlike image." The Washington Post agrees, asserting that the "Rainier eschews more-macho-than-thou exterior design. It is sleek, car-like, people-friendly."

Other reviewers don't find any friendliness in the Rainier's design. The Detroit News writes, "I thought it could use a bit more chrome trim on the exterior -- or maybe even some of those signature Buick portholes on the front fenders. Designers erred on the side of staid, a calculated move to appeal to the 'serious achiever' crowd they hope to draw." Still, the Rainier has its fans. Auto Mall USA says features such as the "wide, three-element headlamps, with separate fog lights and side market lights" and the creased hood lend "an elegant strength to the Rainier's appearance." The Sacramento Bee finds, "The Rainier's exterior look is fairly mainstream SUV, but it was certainly easy on the eyes."
