Chevrolet Avalanche Exterior Review

Exterior - 7.4 (Good)

Auto writers praise the Chevrolet Avalanche's exterior thanks to a 2007 redesign that replaces its universally disliked body cladding with clean sheet metal. Car and Driver sums up the consensus, noting, "Thankfully, the tacky plastic body cladding that marred the original won't be returning, and the new truck is as handsome as the old one was garish."

The 2007 Avalanche is almost identical to the first generation in size, but features a slightly tweaked front end, a power-dome hood and redesigned lighting elements. The Boston Globe compliments the redesign, saying, "Style-wise, the raked front windshield nicely offsets the slanted back braces that run from the back of the roofline to the top of the bed rails. The signature design tells you that this is an Avalanche and not a regular pickup."

The most commented-on feature of the Avalanche's exterior is the removal of the previous generation's body cladding, a decision that greatly pleases virtually ever reviewer. MSN says, "The once awkward-looking Avalanche that used to wear way too much cladding is streamlined and clutter-free on its exterior now." AutoWeek succinctly concludes, "With the 2007 model, Chevy seems to have wrestled the ugly stick back into the closet," and USA TODAY similarly notes: "It no longer looks ugly. The redesign that it shares with all of GM's full-size trucks for 2007 helps greatly. Plus, Chevy discontinued the grotesque side cladding."

Exterior features vary only slightly by trim. The Z71 Off-Road Package, optional on LT2 and LT3 models only, adds 18-inch wheels (17-inchers are standard); oversized wheel flares, and satin chrome door handles, grille insert, mirror camps and tubular assist steps.
