New 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Reliability Review [ 2009 , 2008 ]
Reliability
The 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt reliability score of 6.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).
The Cobalt comes with Chevy's three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, and is also supported with a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Despite questionable or lacking reliability data, the New York Times affirms that nothing about the Cobalt is "egregiously wrong," and "it stands as a solid effort." The Sacramento Bee also praises the Cobalt's reliability, writing, "Plenty of folks need basic, affordable, reliable transportation. That's Cobalt's niche." However, Newsday reports, "My tester ran flawlessly, but my time with it was cut short by an ignition switch that absolutely refused to budge one day from the locked position. GM spokesman Michael Albano said later that the dealership to which the car was towed believes the problem was a defective lock cylinder."
Perhaps even more disheartening than the tester car's defect is the reviewer's experience with Chevy's roadside assistance. "I was more disappointed though, with the inability of Chevrolet roadside assistance to get a tow truck to the car until the following day," Newsday continues. "Yes, it was 6 p.m. on a Sunday evening when I called, but there were no blizzards or other cataclysmic events in progress and the location was in a heavily populated area. Twenty-four-hour roadside assistance should mean 24 hours, seven days a week. 'We'll get to you tomorrow' is just not good enough."
