Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

Overall Score - 8.0 (Very Good)

The Malibu Maxx offers comfort and practicality with the versatility of a hatchback, but sacrifices stellar performance and appealing exterior styling.

Reviewers say the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx offers solid if unremarkable performance; accommodating and restrained appointments, and a safe, uninspired ride. Motor Trend says, "Make no mistake: This is a utilitarian piece. If you're about style and/or driving excitement, shop elsewhere." The Washington Post calls the Malibu Maxx "comfortable, reliable, affordable and conservatively styled," and reports, "It is as safe as most midsize cars reasonably can be in a crash with a car of similar size and geometry." The Detroit News says "the Malibu Maxx is not going to do much to improve your image at the country club. But if you look at cars as appliances, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that attitude, you're going to be satisfied with this practical performer."

Reviewers are divided as to whether the Malibu Maxx is a good value. Edmunds believes so, writing, "The spacious and well-equipped Chevrolet Malibu Maxx offers excellent value with its versatile and roomy cabin, peppy performance and above-average fuel economy." The Detroit News, however, while pleased that "the Maxx packs a raft of features into a comfortable package," deems it "not as affordable as we'd like to see." IntelliChoice gives the Malibu Maxx a value rating of "poor," based on the five-year projected cost of ownership compared to others in its class.

Malibu Maxx Performance - 6.6 (Mediocre)

Malibu Maxx Exterior - 6.3 (Mediocre)

The consensus among reviewers is that the exterior styling of the Malibu Maxx is pragmatic and less than striking. "The stubby shape won't please the whole crowd," argues U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman. "But love it or hate it, the Maxx achieves a kind of Subaru factor: It looks like a car owned by people with active, unpretentious lives." continue

Malibu Maxx Interior - 7.3 (Good)

According to the majority of reviewers, the interior of the Malibu Maxx is comfortable for five passengers and pleasant, if not luxurious. Car and Driver says, "There's an airiness to the Maxx's cabin that reliably induces cheer and optimism." continue

Malibu Maxx Safety - NA

Available data and reviewer opinion suggest the Maxx offers a safe ride. The Detroit News finds that it has "a nice complement of safety equipment." The Malibu Maxx scores well in crash tests from the government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). continue
