Dodge Grand Caravan Safety Review

Safety - 7.3 (Good)

Despite performing well in government crash tests, some reviewers note that safety features that are available on competitors' minivans are not available on the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. By the same token, some safety features that are standard on competitors are only options on the Grand Caravan. The Washington Post reports, "Electronic stability control and side air bags are not available in the 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT at this writing, but they are available in the 2007 Hyundai Entourage Limited. Head air bags are optional in the Grand Caravan SXT, but are standard in the Hyundai Entourage Limited."

Even without stability control and side air bags, the Grand Caravan does very well in government crash tests. The van scored a perfect 5 out of 5 stars for driver and front passenger protection in frontal crashes. It also earned a perfect 5 out of 5 score for front and rear seat protection in side impact crashes, and has a 4-star rollover rating.

Accident Avoidance

The Grand Caravan comes standard with anti-lock brakes and a tire pressure monitoring system, which informs the driver of dangerously over- or under-inflated tires. Other accident avoidance features, like stability and traction control are not available on the Grand Caravan, though a rear parking assist system is an option. The Washington Post again notes that the Hyundai "Entourage Limited adds electronic stability control. . . for less money."

Crash Protection

Front multi-stage air bags are standard on the 2007 Dodge Caravan, as is an air bag for the driver's knees. Side impact air bags for all three rows of seats are optional, as are side-curtain air bags.
