Ford Explorer Sport Trac Exterior Review
Exterior - 7.8 (Good)
The 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac's received mixed reactions from reviewers. The exterior strikes "that delicate balance between street style and off-road character, and the Ford designers have managed to make it look not exactly like a work truck, but not exactly like a soccer-mom sport utility vehicle, either," says Kelley Blue Book.
From behind the front doors forward, the new Sport Trac looks just like a Ford Explorer, with a chrome grille and jewel-like headlamps. "Exterior design suggests a Ford F-150 pickup on steroids -- big shouldered and macho," says the Sacramento Bee. The 2007 Sport Trac features "more of a truck-like profile" than its rival, the Honda Ridgeline, according to the Detroit News. "To further enhance its appearance, Ford designers have fitted a bold, chrome-laden face, with anthropomorphic headlamps that give the vehicle more personality than its rival."
Though styling hasn't changed much from the previous model, USA TODAY says the tester still "drew a lot of double takes, interested stares and parking lot fawning." However, several reviewers comment on the Sport Trac's somewhat awkward look. "My eyes are still drawn to the rather large gap between the back of the cab and the pickup bed," says MSN.
4x4REVIEW.com appropriately sums up the Sport Trac's exterior as "rugged yet refined; sort of like the Marlboro man dressed up for a night on the town in an Armani suit." The base XLT model comes with 16-inch cast aluminum wheels and black roof rails. The optional XLT Appearance Package spices up the base model by adding fog lamps, 17-inch wheels, black side step bars and upgraded tires. Upgrading to the Limited model adds 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, body-colored bumpers, silver roof rails, fog lamps and upgraded tires.
