Ford Focus Wagon Interior Review

Interior - 6.5 (Mediocre)

Reviewers generally see the 2007 Ford Focus Wagon's five-seat interior as spacious with high-quality materials for such an affordable car, even if some find it a bit sparse on standard features. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says, "Inside, the wagon is roomy and comfortable, certainly one that accommodates four moderate-sized adults and their luggage."

The Detroit Free Press calls the interior "among the most appealing in the compact class. Direct-feeling switches, big climate control knobs, supportive seats and a high, upright seating position -- it's all here." But others are less impressed, with U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman noting, "The interior is Spartan. Dials and other cockpit controls have a cheap, plasticky feel." The Orlando Sentinel likes the wagon's "airy feel," but complains about interior noise: "In the Focus, you hear the engine, both at idle and on acceleration," its reviewer says. "You don't get a sense that the car is highly insulated from noise overall, because road noise and wind noise also are evident."

Seating

With 95.7 cubic feet of passenger volume, the Ford Focus Wagon is the roomiest of all Focus models and "nudges out the compact Ford Escape sport-ute" in terms of total volume, according to the Detroit Free Press. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reviewer finds seating in the wagon comfortable, noting, "I've had one on a long trip and never had any back pain or other complaints."

Reviewers have mixed opinions on seating comfort and roominess. In the front seats, the Chicago Sun-Times finds "good room...for two tall adults in big, supportive seats." But Edmunds complains about front seat comfort, noting "the seats themselves are firm and the bolstering itself is adequate, but lumbar support is nil, and what's worse, there is always something wonky with the seat position."

Reviewers generally find rear seat room good, though the Chicago Sun-Times found it "a bit tight for a 6-footer behind a driver with his seat pushed all the way back." But the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reviewer had a different experience, noting, "I had one passenger who is more than 6-foot tall sit in back and he had no trouble with space."

Interior Features

Reviewers appreciate the Ford Focus Wagon's simple control layout. The Chicago Sun-Times praises, "Gauges can be quickly read, and the smooth controls are exceptionally large and easily reached -- especially those for the climate and sound system controls and for the power windows." The Orlando Sentinel also likes the dashboard's "eye-catching cluster of controls in the center... The steering wheel is compact and the instrument cluster in front of the driver is no-nonsense, with easy-to-understand gauges."

Cargo

The 2007 Ford Focus Wagon provides 35.2 cubic feet of cargo space. With the 60/40-split seat folded, space increases to 73.7 cubic feet - "making it a better hauler than most small SUVs," says Edmunds. Of the 2004 model, the Chicago Sun-Times praises, "The Focus wagon puts larger, highly regarded 'crossover' vehicles such as the Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe (both 53.2 cubic feet) to shame. Chair-height seating helps maximize people- and cargo-carrying capability, and the wagon's squared-off back end allows plenty of cargo space."
