Ford Focus Wagon Safety Review

Safety - 8.5 (Very Good)

The federal government has not tested recent models of the Ford Focus Wagon, but gave the 2004 model good scores in crash tests. The 2007 wagon also includes less safety equipment than other cars, with no available electronic stability control, and side impact air bags and anti-lock brakes offered only as extra-cost options.

The federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not recently tested the Focus Wagon, but gave the 2004 model a perfect 5-star rating for driver protection in frontal crash tests, and 4 stars for front passenger protection. The agency did not test the Focus Wagon in side impact crashes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has not tested the Focus Wagon, but gives the 2007 four-door sedan the highest rating of "good" in frontal offset tests. Models without the optional side air bags get a lower rating of "poor" in side impact tests.

Accident Avoidance

The Ford Focus Wagon features few standard accident avoidance features. Reviewers, including one from the Detroit Free Press, express disappointment that stability control is not available: "I've commended Ford for offering its AdvanceTrac stability control system on the Focus, making it the least-expensive model in the United States with available stability control," the reviewer says. "But for whatever reason, Ford isn't offering this useful safety feature on the wagon."

Crash Protection

Standard on the Ford Focus Wagon are dual stage driver and front passenger air bags, a "safety cell" unitized body construction, and driver and front safety belt pretensioners. Side impact air bags are optional as part of the Safety Package, which also includes anti-lock brakes.
