Honda Civic Safety Review
Safety - 9.8 (Excellent)
As the Detroit News points out, the 2007 Honda Civic "has one of the best safety packages in the class, with standard antilock brakes, side air bags and side-curtain air bags." The Civic achieves class-leading safety ratings from government and insurance industry tests.
Accident Avoidance
The Honda Civic provides a long list of standard safety equipment including side-curtain air bags, front side air bags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), active front head restraints (this is the first model year with those), tethers and anchors for child-protection seats, daytime running lights, and a four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD).
Crash Protection
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Civic 5 out of 5 stars for its frontal crash protection. The Civic receives 4 out of 5 stars from NHTSA for front-seat protection in a side crash, and 5 out of 5 for rear-seat protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards the Civic its highest rating of "good" for frontal-offset and side-impact tests.
Honda's "Safety for Everyone" initiative includes the maker's exclusive Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE ) body structure for enhanced vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility and collision-energy management. A network of load-bearing structures in the front of the vehicle helps disperse energy during a frontal collision. Honda's commitment to safety extends to pedestrians as well as vehicle occupants. To help reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, the Civic's hood and fender areas are designed to deform if contacted by the head of an adult or child pedestrian.
