Honda Odyssey
Overall Score - 9.5 (Excellent)
The Odyssey delivers one of the best combinations of power, road-handling, and cargo/passenger versatility in its class. Moreover, a long list of standard convenience and safety features, combined with Honda's reputation for manufacturing quality vehicles, makes it deserving of your attention.
The 2007 Honda Odyssey receives accolades for its class-leading powertrain, sedan-like handling, eight-passenger capacity, expansive cargo room, seating versatility, long list of standard convenience and safety features, and record of reliability. In fact, the Odyssey is the recipient of the 2007 Car and Driver "5 Best Trucks," Edmunds "Most Wanted" and Consumer Guide "Best Buy" awards. Available in four trim-levels -- LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring -- the Honda Odyssey is described by the Boston Globe as being the "perfect car."
According to U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman, "The Odyssey is arguably the best-performing minivan on the market." Aside from mixed reviews on its transmission's ability to downshift smoothly, reviewers appear to be impressed by its powerful V6 engine and fuel-efficient Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system. Despite minor steering woes and its suspension's inability to shield rear passengers against harsh road bumps, the Odyssey's superb brake system contributes to an overall pleasing driving experience.
While auto writers generally agree that the Odyssey's exterior body styling is nothing to gawk at, none appear to be altogether dismayed by its design. Its interior cabin, on the other hand, receives widespread praise for its ergonomic design, many convenience features, and overall versatility. Automotive.com boasts, "Inside, the Odyssey is comfortable and convenient."
Perhaps most important for a family-oriented vehicle is the fact that the 2007 Honda is outfitted with an impressive list of standard safety equipment, and even scores highly in both government and private crash tests. Adding to this is a level of reliability that has a reviewer at Automobile.com declaring, "I confidently rate the Odyssey as one of the most -- if not the most -- operationally refined minivans on the market."
While IntelliChoice gives the Honda Odyssey a rating of “excellent” for its predicted five-year total cost of ownership, compared to other vehicles in its class, Kelley Blue Book warns that "the only deterrent to purchasing an Odyssey may be its high price and limited availability." MSN explains, "You can't be a bargain hunter if you want a new Odyssey. This is not a bargain-priced van." Nevertheless, Automotive.com still asserts that "the Odyssey delivers everything you could ask for in a minivan."
