Hummer H3

Overall Score - 7.6 (Good)

The H3 demonstrates terrific off-road prowess in a distinctive, rugged package, but can't match the on-road performance or comfort of others in its class. If you're in the market for an affordable midsize SUV with off-roading abilities, you should also consider the Toyota 4Runner and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Reviewers generally agree that the 2007 Hummer H3 boasts great off-road capability, but just mediocre highway performance. "If you want a comfortable, car-like SUV, go buy one, there are dozens to choose from," says Edmunds. "But if it's a hard-core, go-anywhere truck that lights your fire, the...Hummer H3 delivers." The H3 is more fuel-efficient than the larger Hummer models, but still uses a considerable amount of gas. The H3 "may be the baby bear of its clan," says Motor Week, "but it has all the DNA of the original. Indeed, we think it is just right."

The H3 is the least expensive of the Hummers. The base price may be high for its class, but for serious off-road driving enthusiasts, it's worth the cost. "Going off-road?" asks The Washington Post. "The H3 is a buy." IntelliChoice gives the 2007 Hummer H3 a value rating of "excellent" for its total predicted cost of five-year ownership, compared to vehicles in its class. The H3 is also an IntelliChoice Best in Class winner for "Best Overall Value of the Year - Intermediate Utility" and for "Highest Retained Value."

The Hummer H3 has two available trims: the base H3 (with the optional Adventure and Luxury packages) and the H3x. All models have a choice of the standard five-speed manual transmission or the optional automatic transmission.

H3 Performance - 7.3 (Good)

Reviewers generally aren't thrilled about the 2007 Hummer H3's on-road performance, but they feel it's more than adequate -- even ideal -- for off-road driving. According to Car and Driver, "Off-road, where gradual and precise throttle response is usually far more important than power (particularly when a low crawl ratio is included), the H3 is just right." continue

H3 Exterior - 7.9 (Good)

Although smaller, the 2007 Hummer H3 has the same military-transport appearance as earlier models -- a look that reviewers feel will satisfy Hummer fans. Kelley Blue Book says the H3 "doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is: A capable, traditional Sport Utility Vehicle that looks the part of a serious off-road machine." continue

H3 Interior - 7.3 (Good)

The H3's interior may not be luxurious, but it's generally well reviewed. "The interior design is just about the best on a GM truck in a long time," says Motor Trend. "The simple center stack and superior materials on knobs and flush surfaces set a new standard for Hummer." continue

H3 Safety - 9.0 (Excellent)

The 2007 Hummer H3 receives nearly perfect scores in front and side crash tests conducted by the federal government. While useful safety equipment like traction control comes standard, side curtain airbags are just optional. continue

H3 Reliability - 5.0 (Mediocre)

The 2007 Hummer H3 reliability score shown is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates.
