Hyundai Sonata Safety Review

Safety - 9.7 (Excellent)

Reviewers agree that thanks to an impressive list of standard safety features, the 2007 Hyundai Sonata is very competitive. The Detroit News exclaims, "If you are obsessed with safety features, the new Sonata is bound to come out on the top of your shopping list." In government crash tests, the 2007 Sonata received a top score in frontal impacts, and a high score in rollover tests.

Motor Trend, in particular, notes that "safety sells, so the new Sonata comes standard with six airbags and stability control, a segment first. Also included are traction control and ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, making the Sonata the class leader in active and passive safety." While the US government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded it a perfect score of five-stars for frontal and side crash protection, its rollover rating was four-of-five stars. Moreover, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it an overall rating of "good" (the highest possible) and "acceptable" (the second highest possible) in frontal and side-impact crash tests, respectively. "As if the Sonata doesn't shine enough with its other attributes it really struts its stuff in the safety area," says BusinessWeek.

Accident Avoidance

Every 2007 Hyundai Sonata comes outfitted with an Anti-lock Brake, Electronic Stability Control, and Traction Control System. The Detroit News exclaims that this is "mind-blowing...especially when you size up the car against the competition." Electronic Stability Control is only optional on the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima, and not even available on the Honda Accord.

Crash Protection

In the event that a crash does occur, six standard airbags and front active head restraints help to ensure passenger safety, including two advanced front airbags, two front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and two side-curtain airbags for front and outboard rear passengers.
