Jeep Liberty
Overall Score - 7.7 (Good)
The Liberty delivers off-road performance, top-notch towing and pioneering design, but can't match the on-road performance or comfort of others in its class. If you're in the market for an affordable compact SUV, you should also consider the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4. For similar off-road ability and better road manners, consider the Toyota FJ Cruiser.
The 2007 Jeep Liberty offers superior off-road capability and is popular with buyers, even in its last year prior to a 2008 redesign. Off-road, the Liberty is loved by all and receives stellar reviews for its towing capacity, torque and muscle. Motor Week experienced "plenty of oomph to power through deep snow and thick mud like a Jeep should." Edmunds calls the Liberty "nimble as a billy goat" off-road, but finds that the same "heft required to make it a surefooted billy goat in the rough hobbles it somewhat on the highway and in the city." Other critics echo Edmunds' view that the Liberty isn't an ideal around-town vehicle. Newsday complains that the Jeep's ride is "choppy."
Overall, the Liberty is a good option for buyers looking for an affordable and off-road-ready SUV. Consumer Guide considers it "capable, solid, and competitively priced." However, IntelliChoice gives the 2007 Jeep Liberty a "poor" value rating for its predicted five-year cost of ownership compared to other vehicles in its class.
