The Optima delivers a spacious and affordable ride, but can't match the reliability and solid performance of some of its competitors. If you're in the market for an affordable midsize car, you should also consider the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
Auto reviewers see the 2007 Kia Optima as a solid choice in the midsize sedan segment, thanks to its new standard features (including safety equipment), redesigned exterior, quality feel and enjoyable ride. Kelley Blue Book advises "If you're looking for a four-door sedan with responsive driving capabilities, a lot of features and an attractive price, the Optima should be on your shopping list." The 2007 model technically debuted in mid-2006 and is often referred to as the 2006.5 model, because U.S. specifications dictate that cars built in 2005 cannot be designated as 2007 models.
The Optima's most distinct advantage over the competition is affordability. "In the crowded midsize sedan segment, it stands out as an inexpensive alternative," says Edmunds. Likewise, Motor Trend notes the Optima is "priced well below its competitors -- at $16,955, it undercuts Accord by $1,780 and Camry by $2,030 -- yet it comes with an even better warranty." The Boston Globe reports that "unless you start loading extras into this roomy sedan, you can be behind the wheel for well under $20,000." Plus, the Optima's price cut doesn't seem to take a toll on its quality. Edmunds continues "The Optima has been seriously upgraded, and improvements in materials and build quality are as readily apparent as the number of features now offered, many of them standard."
Kelley Blue Book says that "While the LX Optima's value is a no-brainer, a loaded EX enlarges the competitive field to include such vehicles as the Honda Accord and the Volkswagen Jetta." However, the reviewer adds "Unfortunately, the Optima's resale figures are near the bottom of the pack, falling well below the class leaders from Honda, Toyota and even Ford and Chevrolet." IntelliChoice gives the 2007 Optima base model an "average" value rating for its predicated five-year total cost of ownership, compared to vehicles in its class. But it also gives the Optima a leg up on the competition -- the 2007 model is an IntelliChoice Best in Class Winner for "SmartChoice Repair Costs."
The 2007 Kia Optima is available in two trims: the base LX and the EX. Both trims are available with either a standard four-cylinder engine or an optional V6.
Optima Performance - 7.8 (Good)
Reviewers generally agree that the 2007 Kia Optima performs respectably well for its affordable price. Edmunds says the four-cylinder engine model "provided enough zest for romping up and down the valley." However, weak highway acceleration is a frequent complaint. continue

Many state the Optima's redesigned exterior is good, but not likely to draw a crowd. The Chicago Sun-Times says "While improved, the new Optima's mainstream styling won't turn heads, although that's no drawback because most mid-size Japanese sedan buyers don't want flashy styling." continue

The Optima's five-seat interior is generally considered spacious, well laid-out and more upscale than most people expect. Edmunds says "Where this car shines is inside the cabin. A lot of work has gone into providing space for people and cargo and improving the look and feel of the interior materials." continue
Optima Safety - 9.7 (Excellent)
The 2007 Kia Optima features plenty of standard crash protection equipment, including air bags all around. Somewhat lacking in accident avoidance features, the Optima does receive excellent scores in government crash tests. continue
