Kia Sportage Safety Review

Safety - 7.6 (Good)

The Sportage performs reasonably well in the federal government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and insurance industry crash tests.  The Detroit News raves that "the Sportage's standard safety features give you the sense that Kia has set itself up as Korea's version of [the] uber-safety-conscious Volvo."

Accident Avoidance

The Sportage comes equipped with 4-wheel disk brakes; 4-wheel ABS brakes; Electronic Stability Control; a traction control system; and an optional tire pressure monitoring system (which is standard on the EX).

Crash Protection

Other standard safety features include a wide array of air bags, including dual front advanced air bags, dual front seat-mounted side air bags, full-length side curtain air bags, front seat-belt pretensioners and LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children).

In frontal and side government crash tests, the 2007 Sportage earns a top rating of "five stars out of five." In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests, it received a less-stellar rating of "acceptable" in front and side crash tests.
