Lexus GS 450 Hybrid Safety Review

Safety - NA

The GS 450 Hybrid is regarded by auto writers as a safe luxury sedan, protecting drivers and passengers with a long list of advanced and sophisticated safety-enhancing systems. The Detroit News calls the GS 450 Hybrid "world-class" with safety features and CNET also notes its "impressive lineup of advanced safety systems."

Accident Avoidance

The GS 450 Hybrid is very competitively equipped with a Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM), which organizes and integrates a long list of high-tech safety and performance systems. These features taken together are comparable to similar systems found in the best cars in this class, including the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes E-Class. VDIM integrates Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Antilock Braking System, Brake Assist, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Electronically Controlled Brakes, Electronic Power Steering and Variable Gear Ratio Steering all in conjunction to help minimize loss of traction and help maintain vehicle control in taxing conditions. Edmunds reports that "these computerized systems work together with advanced engineering that simultaneously enhances driving pleasure while adding safety."

Crash Protection

The GS 450 Hybrid comes standard with dual-stage and side curtain driver air bags, dual-stage and side seat-mounted front passenger air bags, side seat-mounted and side curtain rear passenger air bags, a highly rigid body structure, side-impact door beams, front and rear crumple zones, three-point seatbelts, a child restraint seat and child safety locks, a full-color display backup camera, electronic park assist and daytime running lights among other standard safety features.

Advanced Safety Systems

The optional Pre-Collision System for the GS 450 Hybrid uses radar waves to detect a vehicle ahead and determine if a front collision is avoidable. The moment the driver pushes the brake pedal, the system then retracts the front seatbelt and activates Brake Assist.
