Lexus GS Safety Review

Safety - 9.0 (Excellent)

The GS is equipped with many standard safety features, and can be equipped with Lexus' advanced Pre-Collision System. The 2007 GS earned top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, receiving the highest result of "Good" in both frontal offset and side impact tests.

Accident Avoidance

The Lexus GS 430 features a Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system. This system, using eight different safety features, controls traction during a turn. When a problem is detected, the system uses individual-wheel braking, throttle activation and steering assistance to correct the situation and preventing a skid from happening. This combination of resources helps keep the GS 430 on track. While this feature is not available on the GS 350, the GS 350 has both Vehicle Stability Control and Traction Control.

Crash Protection

The 2007 Lexus GS has nine air bags throughout the interior, including front and rear side curtain air bags, front side air bags, driver's and front passenger knee air bags and a dual-stage frontal airbag system, which deploy at different speeds depending on the intensity of impact and front seating position. The GS also has daytime running light and three-point seatbelts.

Government crash tests have not been performed on the GS 350 or the GS 430.

Advanced Safety Systems

For an additional standalone option fee, the 2007 Lexus GS model can include Lexus' Pre-Collision System. The Pre-Collision System has a front-mounted radar sensor that can detect an object ahead. If the computer determines an unavoidable front collision, the front seatbelts preemptively tighten and the Brake Assist increases brake force, all immediately after the driver steps on the brake pedal. The GS Pre-Collision System comes with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and is available for all 3 GS trim levels.

The GS Pre-Collision System, coupled with the standard Anti-lock Braking System and standard Brake Assist, is a powerful asset in crash protection. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) uses computerized controls to help prevent wheel skid or lock during braking. The Electronic Brakeforce Distribution manages force between the front and rear brakes, limiting front end brake dip. Brake Assist helps increase brake force when the brake pedal does not have enough pressure applied.
