Mazda MAZDA6 Wagon Safety Review

Safety - 9.5 (Excellent)

The Mazda6 Sport Wagon maintains a long list of standard safety features and receives outstanding crash test scores. Government crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration award the 2007 Mazda6 Sport Wagon a perfect score of five stars for driver and front passenger protection in frontal impact crash tests, as well as four stars for front and backseat occupant protection in side impact crash tests and a four star rollover rating.

Accident Avoidance

Every 2007 Sport Wagon comes outfitted with power-assisted ventilated front/solid rear disc brakes and an anti-lock brake system. Also standard is Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and a Traction Control System. "I was pleased with the brakes' response, although another driver wished for more feedback through the pedal," says an auto writer at the Orlando Sentinel.

Crash Protection

The Sport Wagon is equipped with a dual front air bag supplemental restraint system, front side-impact air bags, as well as front and rear side air curtains. Moreover, three-point safety belts in all seating positions (including front safety-belt pretensioners with force limiters), a Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children system, as well as whiplash-reducing front seat headrests and rear headrests are standard. Kelley Blue Book, however, notes that "visibility to the rears is somewhat compromised by the high flanks and rear seat headrests."

The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety awards the 2007 Mazda6 a rating of "Good" (the highest possible) for both frontal impact crash tests. No score is available for the Mazda6 Sport Wagon.
