Mazda MAZDA6

Overall Score - 8.3 (Very Good)

The Mazda6 delivers sporty handling dynamics and a sleek, stylish exterior, but can't match the off-the-line pickup or interior spaciousness of others in its class.

Reviewers find the 2007 Mazda6 is a sporty and stylish alternative to its somewhat conservative class-leading competition. AutoWeek says, "The 6 offers all the practicality of the cars it competes against, all the comfort, too, and still manages to feel like a sporty little sports sedan at the same time." Kelley Blue Book writes, "If you need the practicality of a midsize sedan, but you'd really like the driving involvement and performance characteristics of something with more personality, the Mazda6 makes for the perfect compromise." While it's "not a class leader in any respect," admits Newsday, "the 6 plays in the same tough ballpark and, at the very least, it offers an alternative to its ubiquitous competitors."

According to Consumer Guide, the Mazda6 is "one of the sportiest midsize cars and competitively priced." The Detroit Free Press calls it "practical, comfortable and affordable," while Motor Trend claims, "The Mazda6 delivers a lot of sporty car for the money, especially when compared with Japanese rivals that usually cost more when equally equipped." The Mazda6, available as a sedan or hatchback, offers "i" (four cylinder) and "s" (V6) versions. IntelliChoice value ratings for "i" series models generally range from "Worse Than Average" to "Average," while ratings for "s" series models generally range from "Poor" to "Worse Than Average" for their predicted five-year cost of ownership compared to other vehicles in their class.

The "i" series is available with Sport, Sport VE, Touring and Grand Touring trim. The "s" series is available with Sport VE, Touring and Grand Touring trim.

MAZDA6 Performance - 7.7 (Good)

Reviewers judge the Mazda6 to be particularly sporty for a midsize sedan. The Los Angeles Times reports, "The car sticks to the road on the curves without tossing driver and passengers all over the inside, accelerates powerfully on the straights (especially with the throaty V-6 howling away) and stops better than anything else in its class." continue

MAZDA6 Exterior - 8.4 (Very Good)

Reflecting its sporty underpinnings, the exterior of the Mazda6 helps it stand out in a conservative segment. Automobile Magazine claims it "adopts the aggressive look of a hot-rodded import tuner car, helping distinguish it from the virtuous but staid competition." continue

MAZDA6 Interior - 6.8 (Mediocre)

The Detroit Free Press says the Mazda6's interior "offers an attractively simple, driver-centric environment," and most reviewers agree. In fact, the interior might be too driver-centric. The Detroit News echoes the comments of some reviewers when it says that there's "just not enough rear-seat room to make this the perfect family vehicle." continue

MAZDA6 Safety - 9.4 (Excellent)

The 2007 Mazda6 is equipped with safety features comparable to those of its class competitors. In government crash tests, it earns 5 of 5 stars for driver and front passenger protection in frontal impacts. It gets 4 out of 5 stars for front and rear seat occupant protection in side-impact tests. continue
