Mercury Montego Safety Review

Safety - 9.6 (Excellent)

Available data points to the Montego being one of the safest cars in its class. It earns 4 out of 5 stars in frontal crash tests and 5 out of 5 stars in side impact government crash tests. Edmunds points out that the Montego is "built on a Volvo platform" and makes "use of the Swedish manufacturer's AWD and airbag technologies" in arguing that the Montego's safety rating should be "no surprise." The San Diego Union-Tribune says, "The safety features and all-wheel drive of the Mercury Montego sedan are as comforting as a bowl of hot soup."

Accident Avoidance

The 2007 Mercury Montego comes standard with traction control and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake force distribution. A rear obstacle detection system is optional on the base Montego and standard on the Premier. Exclusive to the Premier is the optional all-wheel drive system, which reviewers recommend. A reviewer for AutoWeek claims, "I've driven many a front-driver, rear-driver and 4WD/AWD SUV that didn't punch through the in-between-lanes snow piles with the ease and lack of drama I found in the Montego." About.com writes, "The Montego may not be designed for thrills, but it is designed to react sharply in an emergency situation, and my test car's all-wheel-drive ensures that the Mercury's grip will keep up when the weather turns lousy."

Crash Protection

Government testers at the government's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration award the Montego five out of five stars in frontal and side crash tests and four out of five stars in rollover tests. The Montego performs equally well in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, receiving a rating of "good" -- the highest possible rating -- for frontal and side impact crashes. In addition to front air bags, the Montego also comes standard with seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain air bags for all seating positions. The adjustable pedals ensure that shorter drivers needn't sit too close to the steering-wheel-mounted air bag.
