2007 Mercury Mountaineer Exterior Review [ 2008 ]
Mercury Mountaineer Exterior Review
Exterior - 8.0 (Very Good)
The Mountaineer's design doesn't get high marks for originality, but reviewers still find it pleasing. Conspicuously similar to its Ford Explorer sibling, the Mountaineer is "nice to look at in a boxy, 'Merican kind of way," according to Car and Driver.
The Mountaineer, which stands 72.8 inches tall, 193.4 inches long and 73.7 inches wide, is praised by Kelley Blue Book for taking the "rugged good looks" of the Explorer and adding attractive Mercury styling.
The writers had fun playing with the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer's power integrated running boards, which are hidden within the SUV's rocker panels when the doors are closed for a "clean, uncluttered look," NorthJerseyCars.com notes. Once the doors are opened, however, the appropriate side's running board "slides out to facilitate entry or exit. Both young and old passengers appreciated this courtesy," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writer relays of the experience. "Close the door, and "zip! -- the running board motors back into its nest," the San Francisco Chronicle explains.
While enjoyed by most, the running boards were an irritant for Autofieldguide.com's reviewer, who claims that "egress is usually a case of stepping past the board and dropping to the ground."
