Pontiac Torrent

Overall Score - 7.4 (Good)

The Torrent delivers a roomy interior, comfortable ride and great safety ratings, which makes it a solid option as a family hauler. However, those who are looking for a sporty drive on or off-pavement should keep looking. Consider the highly- ranked Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 for better compact SUV value, or look at the capable Toyota FJ Cruiser if you plan to venture off-road.

Like its Chevrolet Equinox and Saturn VUE siblings, the 2007 Pontiac Torrent is a competent but unexciting option in the compact SUV and crossover segment. Pluses include exceptional roominess and a comfortable ride, but critics find that the Torrent's driving performance doesn't live up to its sporty exterior. Car and Driver sums up the Pontiac Torrent best by saying that "This isn't a vehicle for enthusiasts, but like the Equinox, it's competent, versatile, well equipped, and good-looking."

The Torrent straddles the line between compact and midsize SUV classes. While it costs a few thousand more than the smaller RAV4 and CR-V, it's a very low-priced option when compared to midsize competitors such as the Ford Edge and Honda Pilot. Most critics share the Washington Post's view that it offers "good value" as a family SUV, with a standard 3.4-liter V6 engine and optional AWD. IntelliChoice gives the 2007 Pontiac Torrent a rating of "average" for its predicted five-year total cost of ownership, compared to other vehicles in its class.
