Saab 9-7X Exterior Review

Reviewers for the most part approve of the exterior styling in the 2007 Saab 9-7X, praising designers for adding Saab qualities to what is essentially a GM frame. Kelley Blue Book writes "Saab's designers did an excellent job of giving the 9-7X its own identity."

Using the GMT360 platform for its first SUV is not a bad thing at all, writes Car and Driver. "This body-on-frame combo is as tough as Stonewall Jackson's horse ... and is about as good as this configuration gets." With key Saab changes that include a three-port grille, wraparound-look rear glass, 18-inch aluminum wheels and flared wheel arches, Kelley Blue Book claims, "the 9-7X comes across as far sportier and more sophisticated than any of the vehicles with which it shares so much." New Car Test Drive likes the effect as well, adding, "When you see so much giant-grille, aggressive, I'm-coming-to-get-you, high-riding military styling on the roads, it's refreshing to see an SUV with a borrowed body that looks so good."

Though the 2007 Saab 9-7X receives good reviews for integrating Saab effects to the GM frame, some reviewers find it's not altogether seamless. Cars.com points out, in spite of the front end's successful Saab look, "The tailgate leaves considerable gaps where it shuts, and the fender flares are little more than molded strips. These sorts of detail lapses might be acceptable from a lesser brand, but luxury shoppers expect more."

The wheels also received praise. Edmunds notes "the company polished each corner of the vehicle with standard 18-inch alloy wheels and lowish-profile 55-series tires -- something you won't find Land Rover, Porsche or even BMW doing."
