Subaru Outback Exterior Review

Exterior - 8.0 (Very Good)

Reviewers most often compare the Outback's exterior to those of other utility vehicles, and not those of Euro or Euro-inspired wagons in its class. In this context, it fares well. The Washington Post, for instance, finds, "It has more sex appeal than most SUVs -- nicely tapered exterior lines capped by a fastback roof."

These SUV comparisons could be due to exterior styling that, some reviewers find, speaks of practicality and activity. Forbes writes, "Even without a kayak or set of skis fastened on top, Outback wagons look like they have a really meaningful destination to get to, somewhere exotic, apt to be loads of fun. They scream road trip." The Los Angeles Times agrees, saying, "The Outback models look lean and outdoorsy."

The Outback's last major exterior overhaul came in 2005. Edmunds points out, "Earlier models had a rugged, backwoods look, but the current sedan and wagon are sleek, somewhat angular and available with either monochromatic or two-tone paint." U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman says, "The aggressive edginess of the new styling suggests babes on board rather than babies on board, precisely the kind of image young hipster families seek."

Some minor changes have been made for 2007. Cars.com reports: "Every Outback boasts a redesigned hood and fenders, but most onlookers will be hard-pressed to tell the difference. More easily apparent is the new grille." Kelley Blue Book claims that the Outback's "Aerodynamic ground-effects components blend with more pronounced wheel arches to give it a bolder stance." Not all reviewers see the Outback as bold or SUV-like. The Auto Channel argues, "Now that the line between crossovers and 'real' SUVs is blurred, the Outback looks less like an SUV and more like what it really is -- a small wagon with extra ground clearance and a little lower-body protective cladding."
