Toyota Camry Hybrid

Overall Score - 8.6 (Very Good)

The Camry Hybrid delivers comfort and fuel efficiency, but can't match the exciting performance of others in its class. For better performance at the cost of gas mileage, consider the Honda Accord Hybrid, or the conventional Toyota Camry.

The 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid, according to reviewers, is a comfortable sedan that nicely balances performance, comfort and fuel economy. USA TODAY says, "Try to find some other nice car with honest room for five adults that will give you mid-30s real-world mileage." Kelley Blue Book asserts, "Driving a Camry Hybrid is one way to appease your social conscience while still providing your family with a roomy and comfortable car." Restrained exterior styling and ample power do little to betray the car's hybrid status. Edmunds calls the Camry Hybrid "pure smarts," writing, "It's fresh, refined and above all, very, very normal."

In a head-to-head test conducted by Motor Trend, the Camry Hybrid bested the more-powerful Honda Accord Hybrid because of its "consistent 30-mpg-plus mileage without the Accord's $30,000-plus asking price. Toyota's extraction of true V6 performance from a pedestrian-size inline-four simply upstages Honda's transformation of a sweet 3.0-liter V6 into an admittedly swaggering one." Newsday, comparing the Camry Hybrid to the Toyota Prius, finds, "The Prius can't match the Camry's quietness and its elegant ride."

The majority of reviewers judge the Camry Hybrid to be a good value in relation to its competitors largely because of its loaded interior. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman writes, "Like Honda's Civic and Accord hybrids, the Camry is priced at the top of the lineup," and points out, "That includes a good set of standard features." BusinessWeek suggests that prospective owners "check out current tax incentives on hybrids at hybridcenter.org," a site which "has a cost calculator that allows you to plug in different financial variables" and "determine your likely real costs of ownership." IntelliChoice gives the Camry Hybrid a rating of "excellent," for its predicted five-year cost of ownership, compared to other vehicles in its class.

Camry Hybrid Performance - 7.5 (Good)

Reviewers find the 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid performs with enough power and finesse to make its hybrid status an afterthought. Forbes reports, "Most of the time you can quite simply forget that you're driving a hybrid, because it behaves almost exactly like a gasoline-engine car -- which says a lot about the sophistication of the hybrid system." continue

Camry Hybrid Exterior - 7.7 (Good)

The Camry Hybrid's debut coincides with the regular Camry's top-to-bottom overhaul, which resulted in an exterior that's sleeker than those belonging to Camrys past, though still refined and solid enough to maintain its long-established identity. continue

Camry Hybrid Interior - 8.0 (Very Good)

The interior of the Camry Hybrid, reviewers agree, is comfortable and packed with features. Like the exterior, the hybrid's interior style echoes the regular Camry. This means, as BusinessWeek writes, it's "clean, with the regular Camry's elegant, understated design." continue

Camry Hybrid Safety - 9.2 (Excellent)

The 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid is loaded with safety features and scores well in government crash tests, receiving 5 out of 5 stars for both frontal and side impact tests. As the Detroit News points out, "Toyota didn't scrimp on safety." continue
