Toyota Highlander Hybrid Safety Review

Safety - NA

Although there is no current crash test data available specifically for the hybrid model, the conventional Highlander received a stellar 5 stars out of 5 in both frontal and side-impact government crash tests and the highest rating of "good" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Accident Avoidance

The 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes standard with Toyota's Star Safety System with Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, which includes Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, anti-lock brake system with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist. "Those systems cooperate with each other for precise vehicle control when emergency maneuvers are necessary," says CNET. Autoweb reports that visibility is good, "thanks to large rearview mirrors and an expansive greenhouse."

Crash Protection

The 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes fitted with plenty of protective features. "The Highlander's solid construction, strategic crush zones, and generous complement of air bags work well for passive safety when a collision is unavoidable," reports CNET.

Included is a driver and front passenger Advanced Airbag System, driver and front passenger front seat-mounted side air bags and front and second row roll-sensing side curtain air bags; HomeLink universal transceiver; front and rear energy-absorbing crumple zones; side-impact door beams; Daytime Running Lights; driver and front passenger seat belt warning sensor; three-point shoulder belts in all seating positions; adjustable shoulder belt anchors for front seating positions; front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters; a Child Restraint System; a collapsible steering column, and collision sensors to deactivate the high-voltage battery.
