2007 Toyota Prius [ 2009 , 2008 ]
Toyota Prius
Overall Score - 8.4 (Very Good)
The Prius delivers more than its acclaimed, industry-leading fuel economy. The most famed hybrid now competes with the best of sedans in reliability, safety, and interior roominess. If you're in the market for an affordable midsize car, also consider the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. For other top hybrid options, consider the Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.
First sold in the United States in 2000 for the 2001 model year, the Toyota Prius has dominated the hybrid car market ever since. The 2007 Prius continues to offer industry-leading fuel economy and impress auto critics as the most technologically advanced, ultra-low emission vehicle available. But Toyota hasn't stopped there. Today's Prius is also appreciated for its smooth handling, roomy interior, solid reliability and safety ratings, and a status conferred by driving the most environmentally friendly car on U.S. roads. Kelley Blue Book says, "For environmentally savvy families seeking to conserve both fuel and the great outdoors, the Prius is second to none." Edmunds adds, "This four-door hybrid has become a hit with consumers because of its stellar fuel economy, relatively uncompromised driving and acceleration characteristics, and reasonable price." Finally, Automobile Magazine calls the Prius science fiction "made reality in a practical, livable form."
Most reviewers praise the value of the 2007 Toyota Prius within its class. MSN notes, "If the gasoline savings, new styling and a lengthy list of technology features aren't enough to attract shoppers, it's likely the Prius price tag will." Road and Track adds, "Considering all the technology, drivability and increased space, this price is quite remarkable." U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman reports, "The Prius is so proficient for its price that it should no longer be categorized as a quirky, alternative-fuel vehicle, but as an above-average mass-market sedan that just happens to have some extra brains under the hood."
In addition, while many hybrids offer questionable fuel savings compared to conventionally powered cars, the Prius' savings are substantial, especially for drivers who spend much of their time in heavy, around-town traffic. IntelliChoice gives the four-door hatchback sedan and the Touring model a value rating of "excellent" for its predicted five-year total cost of ownership compared to other vehicles in its class.
