The 2007 New Beetle houses the same recognizable shape of previous classic models. Although critics find it both charming and retro-contemporary, some believe the aging (nine year old) New Beetle design is partly to blame for its slumping sales.
Kelley Blue Book calls the "most significant aspect of the New Beetle" its "familiar and friendly shape," which mimics the "best-known automotive shape in the world, the original Beetle." "The latest New Beetle has a more streamlined look," says Edmunds finds the styling "cute yet classic," but also notes that the 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle "isn't so new anymore." It adds that "compared to other competing models, all of which are newer in design, the New Beetle has no real advantage other than its nostalgic halo."
The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle comes as either a hatchback or convertible.
Exterior Trims
The New Beetle two-door sedan has two trim options, a hatchback or convertible, with slight exterior differences with the 2.5-liter such as a rear spoiler with brake light, a top spoiler, splash guards and stainless steel exhaust tips. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman says "in a gadget world, VW still manages to show cleverness. The spoiler above the rear windshield pops out when the car's speed hits 45 miles per hour, and it retracts when the car slows to 12 mph." The 2007 Volkswagen New Beetle 2.5-liter can also come with a power sunroof package, sport roof racks and cargo roof racks.
The Washington Post auto writer calls the two-door hatchback Beetle an "egg shape." He continues, "I'm convinced. People don't take seriously cars that resemble eggs, and the New Beetle looks like an egg threefold." The Chicago Tribune reports that while front, side and rear glass is "large for good visibility, "the wide roof pillars can block some of that view. Outside mirrors are too small, and vehicles coming up alongside are lost for a long time in the blind spot."
