The 2007 Volvo S40 reliability score of 4.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).
Every new Volvo receives comprehensive coverage for the first four years or 50,000 miles.
Several reviews touch on mechanical problems that previous S40s experienced. Motor Trend test drove a 2005 S40 over the course of a year and discovered a few problems. First, the driver-side front seat heater stopped working. Second, a warning light about the passenger-side air bags would come on periodically. However, the reviewers are happy to report both problems were easily resolved. "The dealer found that the ignition switch was shorting, causing the airbag light to go on and that an open circuit in the seat's wire harness was the culprit of the nonfunctional seat heater."
As the car's build and powertrain have been updated, it's hard to say what to expect for the newer model.
