2007 Volvo S60 Safety Review [ 2008 ]
Volvo S60 Safety Review
Safety - 9.5 (Excellent)
Volvo has long been known for its uncompromising approach to safety, and the 2007 S60 is fitted with the full accoutrement of standard safety features Volvos are known for and has earned impressive scores in government crash tests. As the Chicago Tribune says, Volvo has prided itself on being "the choice of the safety-conscious motorist."
The 2007 Volvo S60 earned 4 out 5 stars for driver and front passenger protection in frontal impacts by the government's National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), and 5 out of 5 stars for front and backseat protection in side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards it a rating of "good," its best rating, for front impacts, but "adequate," its average rating, for side impacts.
Accident Avoidance
Volvo's Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system, which both adjusts brakes and engine power, is standard on all 2007 S60 trims. Volvo also uses Electronic Brake Assist on the S60, which adds braking power in the event of sudden, hard braking. Anti-lock brakes and a tire pressure monitoring system are also standard. .
Crash Protection
The 2007 Volvo S60 includes a full complement of air bags, including dual-stage front air bags, side-impact and curtain air bags. Volvo also includes a Whiplash Protection System, which moves the backrest backwards to stop the passenger from being thrown forwards, reducing the chance of whiplash injuries. The steering column also collapses in the event of a crash, and Volvo uses anti-submarine seats which prevent the front passengers from sliding under the seatbelts during a crash. Volvo continues to use a strong safety cage for the passenger compartment as well.
