Based on analysis of 14 3-Series-Wagon reviews and test drives.
Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 BMW 3-Series Wagon does well in federal government crash tests. The 3-Series Wagon earned four stars out of five for both driver and front passenger protection in front impact crashes. In side impact crashes, the 3-Series Wagon earned five stars out of five for both front seat and backseat occupant protection. The Detroit News says, "I love the fact that even on its low-end models, like the 3 Series, BMW loads up the safety gear."
Accident Avoidance
Standard accident avoidance features on the BMW 3-Series Wagon include run-flat tires that allow the car to be driven for 150 miles at reduced speed after losing air pressure; Xenon adaptive headlights, which follow the direction of the wheels; an enhanced braking system that will wipe the brakes dry if the windshield wipers are on; dynamic stability control that detects and corrects for a loss of wheel traction; and an anti-lock braking system. Several reviews mention the run-flat tires. "What is far more crucial not just for soccer Mums but all owners are the run-flat tires with flat tire warning," says The Auto Channel. The Los Angeles Times, however, says, "I am not wild about these tires, though they are getting better."
Crash Protection
Standard crash protection features on the BMW 3-Series Wagon includes a driver's and passenger's front air bag supplemental restraint system with front passenger seat sensors; front-seat-mounted side-impact air bags; automatic safety-belt pretensioners; an interlocking door-anchoring system to help protect against door intrusion in side impacts; LATCH attachments for child-restraint safety installation; and a crash sensor that turns on hazard lights and unlocks doors.
