Exterior - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 BMW Z4 coupe's exterior is widely praised for its styling improvement over the Z4 roadster. "Unlike the oddly shaped roadster, the coupe has a rare beauty," says Automobile Magazine. "In fixed-roof form, the Z4's proportions are spot-on rather than ho-hum, its solid stance substantially improved by the self-conscious nineteen-inch wheels and tires."

Comparing the two body styles, Edmunds notes that the roadster "has lines that can be somewhat polarizing, but the coupe -- compact and sinewy -- has the sort of looks that most are likely to appreciate." The Los Angeles Times calls the coupe "surprisingly attractive, a Venus emerging from a sea of geometric hash. By adding some visually balancing mass to the back of the car, the fastback lid vastly improves the Z4's looks."

Kelley Blue Book likes the Z4's long hood and short rear deck so much that the review places the coupe "in the same league as the stunning Porsche Cayman and the upcoming Audi TT." The Chicago Sun-Times makes favorable comparisons to "elemental, fun-to-drive 1960s British MG, Triumph and Austin-Healey sports cars" and notes that the coupe "also has the flowing, tapered lines that made 1960s sports cars such as the Jaguar E-Type coupe so enchanting."

The coupe has an arched hatch and fixed roof. The Z4 roadster has a manually-operated convertible soft top, while a power-folding top is optional.
