The 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer ranks 25 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 29 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Trailblazer falls far short of top competitors in reliability, refined interior and -- unless you're talking about the powerful SS model -- performance. Consequently, it ranks near the bottom of its class. It even falls near the bottom when only compared to other off-road SUVs.
The 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, according to our analysis, has more power than its chassis can handle and lacks the general refinement of its competitors. Most reviews say its strong point is a comfortable, roomy and relatively well-equipped cabin, but that can't make up for sub-par handling and cheap interior materials. "After factoring in the inevitable incentives that accompany the TrailBlazer, it has a decent amount of equipment and is somewhat of a good value, but the interior and the driving experience place it at the bottom of its class," says Car and Driver. "The SS model transcends its plebeian roots, however, and will provide some serious acceleration, handling, and grins."
Despite the fact that reviews say the TrailBlazer is in desperate need of a redesign, it gets only minor changes for 2008, including the addition of standard side air bags. The TrailBlazer is priced competitively, though the price tag increases considerably with an upgrade to the high-performance SS.
The 2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer is available in two main trims: the base LT and the performance-driven SS. The SS is broken down into two sub-trims: the 1SS and the top of the line 3SS.

Trailblazer Performance - 6.4 (Mediocre)
Except when it comes to the sport-tuned and extremely powerful SS model, reviewers aren't impressed by the 2008 TrailBlazer's performance, which ranks near the bottom of the class. Trailblazer Exterior - 8.3 (Very Good)
The TrailBlazer's exterior styling, traces of which can be seen in the current generation of Chevy trucks, is familiar to many potential owners and ranks in the top half of the class. "Overall, TrailBlazer looks sturdy and neat, with confident lines that express utility," says New Car Test Drive. "The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the big fender flares are visually bold." Trailblazer Interior - 6.1 (Mediocre)
Seating and space are adequate in the TrailBlazer, but reviews say the interior is rather uninspiring. The high points are a straightforward layout and comfortable seating for five, but reviews complain about the use of low-grade materials. Consequently, the interior ranks near the bottom of its class. "We felt that the design of the interior looked a bit dated, but the controls were generally easy to figure out," says MarketWatch.
