Chrysler Pacifica - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 Chrysler Pacifica ranks 21 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 28 published reviews and test drives of the Chrysler Pacifica, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Pacifica carries many of the features now expected in crossover vehicles, but doesn't deliver the engine power or value of class leaders and ranks in the bottom half of its class.

While Chrysler has succeeded in putting together a minivan alternative, our analysis shows the engine power and third-row seating fall short of expectations. For 2008, the Pacifica receives minimal changes, with the base trim now called the LX. It also gets a mildly updated engine and transmission. Even with pricey options, the Washington Post feels the Pacifica is "still providing an affordable, yet premium family hauler." However, buyers beware: A fully loaded Limited all-wheel drive version can top out at around $40,000.

The Pacifica comes in several models -- LX, Touring and Limited -- in either front- or all-wheel drive.

Pacifica Performance - 7.7 (Good)

Though the Pacifica gets a good performance score, it can't compete with class leaders because of disappointing engine power. Two V6 engine options replace the previous one-size-fits all V6, and the base 3.8-liter is viewed as insufficient. Still, several reviews note that the Pacifica does have car-like handling. "We were impressed with the way the Pacifica drove, particularly in Northern California, where the paving is excellent, the roads are twisty and interesting, and the traffic is relatively light," says Automotive.com. Pacifica Exterior - 8.6 (Very Good)

The 2008 Chrysler Pacifica earns praise for its updated exterior, which ranks in the top half of its class. Several reviewers comment on the fact that the SUV doesn't look like a minivan, which is a plus. The Detroit News says the Pacifica has "a much more striking look than you get with a minivan, which surely provides a boost to your image." Pacifica Interior - 7.6 (Good)

The 2008 Chrysler Pacifica earns mixed reviews for its interior, which falls in the bottom half of its class. While the 2008 model adds some upscale features, some still find that it lacks the comfort, spaciousness and interior design quality of comparably priced competitors. According to the Detroit News, the Pacifica simply "can't beat the versatility of a minivan" for a family with kids. Pacifica Safety - 8.6 (Very Good)

The 2008 Chrysler Pacifica does very well in crash tests conducted by the federal government and insurance industry. Continue with our full Safety Review to learn why reviewers highly recommend the Pacifica's optional rear backup camera. continue
