Ford Edge - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Ford Edge ranks 9 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 43 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Edge, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Edge's ranking is based on its solid performance, comfortable seating and stylish looks. However, some find its interior quality lacking compared to rivals, and several complain that the alluring base price can quickly skyrocket with options.
The 2008 Ford Edge is applauded for its safety ratings, nifty styling, comfortable cabin and solid performance. According to the Detroit News, "From just about any angle, the Edge looks like a winner -- rock-solid, utterly capable and almost universally appealing." The 2007 model was named as one of AAA and Parents magazine's "Best Cars for Families" and received the "Urban Truck of the Year" award from On Wheels, Inc. It was also a top-ten finisher in Motor Trend's "Sport/Utility of the Year" testing. Though the 2008 Edge ranks in the top half of its class, it ranks in the bottom half when compared only to other affordable crossovers. As a new model last year, few changes have been made to the 2008 Edge. This year's model offers new features, including a power liftgate and Ford's Sync hands-free infotainment system.
The Edge is available in three trims: last year's SE and SEL plus the new-for-2008 Limited, which replaces last year's SEL Plus. It's available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
- "If you want a pleasing, well-rounded tall station wagon -- which is what a crossover SUV actually is -- then the Edge makes a good case for itself." -- Car and Driver
- "Sporty, safe, and fun to drive perfectly describes the new Ford Edge." -- Epoch Times
- "This car was a joy to drive for more than 1,200 miles of highway, local trips, holiday gift shopping, and commuting in traffic." -- Boston Globe
Edge Performance - 7.6 (Good)
The Edge ranks in the middle of its class for performance, which features a comfortable ride with good acceleration. A drawback, however, is that it isn't quite sporty enough for most reviewers. "As for driving dynamics, the Edge is reasonably cooperative and agile at moderate speeds but with little appetite for aggressive driving," says the Los Angeles Times. Edge Interior - 7.6 (Good)
The 2008 Ford Edge ranks in the top half of its class for its five-seat interior, which combines comfort and style in family-friendly accommodations. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman calls the modern cabin "a high point, with electronic climate and audio controls, a helpful information screen, and lots of handy trays, nooks, and pockets for storage." He also praises the kid-friendly factor, noting that the back seat has plenty of room and includes cupholders and a reading light.
