Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
Reviewers are mixed on the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid's redesign, which is described by some as muscular, and others as not quite so. Newsday's reviewer writes, "The sides seem plainer, the hood is higher and the windows are shorter, but I didn't see any women fainting or small children cringing as my tester passed." On the other hand the Detroit News says that "it seems the Escape paid a visit to Charles Atlas. So don't expect any beach bullies to kick sand in its buffed-out face any time soon."
For the 2008 revamp, the Escape Hybrid received a "bolder" grille, "tougher" raised beltline and an "eye-catching" hood, to use the words of Edmunds, Cars.com and the Chicago Sun-Times, respectively. The Los Angeles Times notes that these features, as well as "chrome orthodontia like the Explorer -- all give the Escape a grittier, all-terrain mien," while Edmunds closes out by noting the new Ford-edge headlights, making the new Escape "a handsome little rig."
There is one complainer -- USA TODAY. Its reviewer is displeased with the "big, ugly grille," and notes that the "Ford again has mistaken clutter, confusion and chrome for class."
