2008 Ford Explorer Exterior Review [ 2007 ]
Based on analysis of 45 Explorer reviews and test drives.
Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
Last year's overhaul left the Explorer's exterior largely unchanged, and this year the familiar contours remain. U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman writes, "The Explorer remains boxy and bold, a paragon of toughness."
Adds MSN, "This SUV thus continues as a cautious, mainstream vehicle, though not a backward one, with risk-free styling." Some minor changes tweak the familiar Explorer mold. Kelley Blue Book explains, "The biggest and most obvious change is up front, with three grilles -- each assigned to a particular trim level -- inspired by Ford's F-150 pickup." Those trim levels, in order of ascending price and number of features, are the XLT, the Eddie Bauer, and the Limited.
Headlights and taillights are more oval shaped than previous versions. New Car Test Drive likes the Explorer's "big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors," but notes that "between the elaborate lamps" the Explorer remains "a big empty box with five large doors." AutoMedia.com contends that a pair of features enhances the SUV's performance: "Ridges on the roof help keep it from vibrating, and the larger outside mirrors manage airflow effectively."
