Ford Mustang Convertible - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 Ford Mustang Convertible ranks 2 out of 9 Affordable Four-Seat Convertibles. This ranking is based on our analysis of 32 published reviews and test drives of the Ford Mustang Convertible, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Mustang Convertible is an update of an American classic, and while that's a tough role to play, the automotive press generally thinks the drop-top ponycar pulls it off.  It earns high marks for its retro exterior and strong performance.  Its interior materials aren't quite up to the level of a few competitors, and space is tight for both storage and back seat passengers.

The 2008 Ford Mustang convertible earns praise for its performance and stylized body that echoes the classic models made from 1965 through 1969. When the Mustang Coupe was redesigned in 2005, its modern homage to the classic Mustang helped kick off a design craze that has seen other automakers try to revive classic musclecar nameplates, such as the 2008 Dodge Challenger.  "How do you make one of America's coolest new cars even cooler?" asks Motor Trend, "Just take the top off." With its modern take on classic Mustang styling cues, Chicago Sun-Times says that the Ford Mustang Convertible still "has that old Mustang magic."

In either a capable V6 or a gusty V8, the Mustang Convertible is a strong competitor for reasons beyond nostalgia. It's priced competitively, is one of the top performers in the segment, and gets decent safety scores.   MarketWatch goes furthest: "Our 'Screaming Yellow' convertible was one of the best drop tops we have driven."

The 2008 Ford Mustang convertible is available in four trim levels, V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe and GT Premium.  All convertible Mustangs feature a power vinyl roof, with cloth an option.  V6 Mustang convertibles put out 210 horsepower, V8 models 300.  For 2008, Ford has made side air bags a standard feature and added several new options and special editions, including a GT California appearance package, another name resurrected from the past.

  • "Most drivers will "recognize the icon on sight -- and with General Motors' Camaro and Firebird long gone, there's nothing quite like it." – Motor Trend
  • "The Ford Mustang convertible defines top-down motoring in America." – Automobile Magazine
  • "With such performance and visual punch, the Mustang represents a certifiable bargain." – Road and Travel
  • "It has lots to recommend it, from the relatively affordable sticker price to its solid driving characteristics and thrilling exhaust note." – Detroit News
  • "This is a terrific car, worthy of the beer blessings of Mustang club enthusiasts."  -- Los Angeles Times

Mustang-Convertible Performance - 8.7 (Very Good)

The Mustang Convertible is the power performer in the affordable four-seat convertible class.  Automobile Magazine says that Ford has built "a driving experience that's just as good as this car looks."  The V6 engine is seen as a competent option if you're primarily interested in the look of the car, but most reviews focus on the V8.  No test driver fails to mention the V8's rumbling exhaust note.  Though most four-seat convertibles are front-wheel drive, the Mustang's drivetrain sends its power to the rear wheels.  Handling, however, is still responsive.  Our full Ford Mustang Convertible Performance Review gives details on the performance differences between trim levels. continue

Mustang-Convertible Exterior - 8.4 (Very Good)

The 2008 Ford Mustang Convertible's best asset is its look -- it's a stylish update of an automotive icon.  "It's hard to miss admiring glances when you're behind the wheel," crows Motor Trend, adding, "Even those who don't necessarily care for its heritage-inspired attributes recognize the icon on sight."   Check out the Ford Mustang Convertible Photo Gallery to view the well-liked look yourself, or read our full Exterior Review for reviewer comment that is almost all positive. continue

Mustang-Convertible Interior - 7.0 (Good)

The throwback theme of the Mustang convertible's exterior carries over into the interior.  But while most reviewers like the look, some express concerns about the quality of the interior parts.   Most also note the tiny backseat.  Motor Trend says that the Mustang convertible is "a four-passenger car, but gymnastics might be needed for climbing in back."  Our Mustang Convertible Photo Gallery can help you make your own judgments, while our full Interior Review gives the details on an optional stereo that all Mustang buyers will want to consider. continue

Mustang-Convertible Safety - 8.0 (Very Good)

The 2008 Ford Mustang Convertible has not yet been crash tested by either the federal government or the insurance industry.  Many reviews praise on the car's outward visibility, saying it's impressive when compared to other convertibles.
