Safety - What the Auto Press Says

The GMC Canyon, which is equipped with safety features commensurate to those of its competitors, performs well in government crash tests.

The regular and extended cab models get four out of five stars for driver and front passenger protection in front impact tests, while crew cab models earn five out of five. All Canyon models receive four out of five stars for rollover resistance. In side impact crash tests, all models receive four out of five stars for front seat occupant protection. King Cab models get five out of five stars for rear seat passenger protection in side impact crashes while other models have not been rated.

Accident Avoidance

Anti-lock brakes come standard on the Canyon. On two-wheel drive models with automatic transmissions, traction control is available. New for 2008, a tire-pressure sensor comes standard to warn drivers of dangerous tire conditions.

Crash Protection

The Canyon has standard front air bags. Side-impact air bags are optional on the Canyon. And, as New Car Test Drive reports, "Safety features include the mandated front airbags with GM's Passenger Sensing System, which shuts off the right frontal airbag if the seat is unoccupied or occupied by a child or small adult who might be more injured than protected by an airbag."
