GMC Sierra 1500 - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 ranks 2 out of 7 Full Size Pickup Trucks. This ranking is based on our analysis of 28 published reviews and test drives of the GMC Sierra 1500, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Sierra 1500 gets a high ranking among full size pickups for its good combination of power, handling and comfort. It also offers a number of configurations and a long list of standard and optional features.
With a strong powertrain and smooth handling, a long list of standard features and very good safety scores, the 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 is one of the highest ranked full size pickup trucks. Reviewers praise the Sierra 1500 not only for its strength in utility, but also its luxurious cabin, and say the combination of these attributes give the truck wide appeal. New Car Test Drive says, "Those who plan to use their trucks for commuting to work, carrying lots of family members and towing boats, may prefer the SUV-style interior, while those who use their trucks primarily as working tools will opt for the more utilitarian-oriented pure pickup design." Auto writers also note that with three cabs, three cargo beds, six engines, five suspension and four interior packages, the GMC Sierra can be custom built to each buyer's specifications.
The Sierra 1500 was just redesigned last year, so changes for 2008 are minimal. These include the addition of new standard equipment including XM Satellite Radio. If you're shopping for a full-size pickup, also consider the Sierra 1500's platform-mate, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
- Reviewing both the Sierra and the similar Chevy Silverado, Car and Driver says "It's hard to beat their all-around excellence and utility, although the four-speed automatic transmission now feels dated." -- Car and Driver
- "This brawny four-wheel-drive truck was set up for off-roading, but more than that, it was equipped as a luxurious family transport." -- Arizona Republic
- "While the new Tundra is excellent, the upgraded-for-2008 Titan terrific, the F-150 a solid home run, and the somewhat elderly Ram still highly competitive, these new Silverados and Sierras excel, especially in body fit, driving dynamics, fuel efficiency and cabin quietness." -- Truck Trend
- "The 2008 GMC Sierra is offered in a Denali version, which makes for a comfortable, luxurious, pickup with the emphasis on performance rather than payload and towing capacity." -- New Car Test Drive
