Honda Pilot - What the Auto Press Says

The 2008 Honda Pilot ranks 1 out of 26 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 25 published reviews and test drives of the Honda Pilot, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The Pilot's high ranking is based on its excellent combination of quality performance, a roomy interior, and a reputation for safety and reliability.

The 2008 Honda Pilot is a favorite among reviewers for its solid performance, spacious interior and versatile storage capabilities compared with its class. Car and Driver has named the Pilot one of its "5 Best Trucks" every year since its debut, and explains that it "still offers a combination of practicality, value, and efficiency that has eluded its numerous mainstream-SUV competitors." IntelliChoice names the 2008 Pilot "Best Overall Value of the Year" in its segment, as well as a winner for "Lowest Ownership Costs." It's also classified as a "Best Buy" and has won several awards in the past. A redesign is expected for 2009. Since the Pilot has not been redesigned since its 2003 introduction and not much has changed, this review uses some older research.

For 2008, the base VP (Value Package) replaces the previous base LX model, and a Special Edition trim adds several special features. The Pilot is also available in EX, SE and a top-of-the-line EX-L model.

  • "The midsize Honda Pilot is a well-equipped, well-mannered and practical SUV..." -- Forbes
  • "In a world where many SUVs take up far more space than their utility justifies, and drink far more gas than their performance merits, the Pilot is a breath of fresh air." -- New Car Test Drive

Pilot Performance - 8.1 (Very Good)

The Pilot ranks near the top of its class for performance, with auto writers complimenting its smooth ride and powerful V6 engine. "The Honda Pilot is a joy in daily use," says New Car Test Drive. "We found it easy to maneuver and park in crowded parking lots." Even so, some critics find that the Pilot handles clumsily. Pilot Exterior - 8.6 (Very Good)

The 2008 Honda Pilot ranks in the top third of its class for its exterior, which is sleek but a bit bland for some. "What's to say here? Like all SUVs from the A-pillar aft, the Pilot is basically a big box," says About.com. The Pilot, which shares a similar frame with the Acura MDX, received a styling makeover in 2006. Pilot Interior - 7.9 (Good)

The 2008 Honda Pilot ranks in the top third of its class for its spacious, versatile and surprisingly upscale interior. "There's nothing garish or even particularly luxurious about the Pilot's interior," says New Car Test Drive. "The aesthetic here is the beauty and simplicity of form following function, and that suits us fine." The SUV provides seating for eight and plenty of standard features. However, some reviewers note the dated cockpit materials are beginning to show the Pilot's age. Pilot Safety - 9.8 (Excellent)
