Jaguar XK Exterior Review
Exterior - 8.2 (Very Good)
Most approve of the 2008 Jaguar XK coupe's sleek, muscular styling. "This car has the classic good looks you expect in a Jag coupe," says AutoWeek. "I spent some time last evening in the fading twilight walking around admiring just how damn nice the lines are on this thing."
Edmunds likes the exterior changes implemented with the 2007 redesign: "While there are certainly cues here and there to remind of its prestigious genealogy, the 2008 Jaguar XK is clearly a new kitten -- and a sexy one at that." Another Edmunds reviewer calls the XK's styling "contemporary, mature and undeniably sexy." Road & Travel Magazine also has high praise: "Fleeting glances are non-existent on XK's turf. What might begin as a momentary look-over is sure to quickly develop into a lusty, visual affair. Whether ragtop convertible (top stowed) or classy coupe, the XK is right where Jaguar intended -- straddling the line between sultry sports car and elegantly appointed four-seater. "
However, a few remain disappointed with the XK's styling. Automobile Magazine says it's "not quite there," adding, "On the way up from Phoenix, people haven't been pointing or staring at us in the way that says this car's a hit. We like the way it looks, we respect it, but we don't love it."
The redesigned front end is controversial. "We love the shape of the rear hatch in the coupe, and the gills on the side tickle us, but the front of the car is so impossibly corporate, the grille so eerily reminiscent of the face of the Ford Taurus," comments Automobile Magazine. Of the snout's origins, the New York Times says, "The Scottish-born designer said he deliberately sought a controversial look with a bit of ''discord -- and a sense of edge.' If his goal was to do more than recycle well-established Jaguar themes and designs -- taking the easy, noncontroversial path -- it would seem he has been successful." Some also object to the XK's gaping oval grille, but Cars.com likes it, saying, "Personally, I guess I just like fish."
The XK coupe comes with 18-inch Venus alloy wheels; bright-finish trunk plinth and side window trim; body-colored rear spoiler, door handles, mirror caps and power side vents with integrated indicator; and dual tailpipes with bright finishers. Options are few and include 19-inch Sabre chromed wheels, 20-inch Senta wheels, or 19-inch Carelia wheels. The coupe has a fixed roof, while the XK convertible has a power-operated soft top.
