Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
The vast majority of reviewers is disappointed with the 2008 Jeep Compass' exterior styling simply because it's unattractive and doesn't look like a typical Jeep. "[I]t takes a while for it to register that this diminutive, rounded mini-utility is actually a Jeep," says U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman.
Cars.com describes the Compass as a mish-mash of its Jeep siblings: "The Compass looks like the child of the previous-generation Liberty and the current Grand Cherokee. From the front, it most resembles the Liberty, while the rear bears Grand Cherokee-style taillights. However, the side has creased fender bulges that recall the Dodge Dakota pickup." The Detroit Free Press remarks that the Compass' styling should attract city and suburban dwellers, and MSN refers to it as "sleeker" than other Jeeps.
To many, the waterfall grille is acceptably Jeep-like, but other design elements set the Compass apart from its siblings. Some, like CNET, are unfazed by the styling departures, noting that the Compass "has an exterior design that combines sporty and rugged elements." Although there are those few who favor its looks, there are other reviewers who criticize the compact SUV. Autoweb feels that "the design lacks flow or congruity," while the Washington Post calls it downright "ugly."
The Sport is equipped with 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels, while the Limited gets 18-inch wheels and other exterior accents. Eighteen-inch chrome-clad cast-aluminum wheels are optional on the Limited.
