The Optima delivers a spacious and affordable ride, but can't match the reliability and solid performance of some of its competitors.
The 2008 Kia Optima is a solid choice in the midsize sedan segment, thanks to its newly standard features (including safety equipment), redesigned exterior, quality feel and enjoyable ride. However, the Optima is considered average in a class that includes competitors that offer more of everything.
The Optima is available in two trims: the base LX and the EX. Both trims are available with either a standard four-cylinder engine or an optional V6. There are very few changes for the 2008 model, but they include a standard auxiliary input jack and updated gauges. If you're in the market for an affordable midsize sedan, also consider the Honda Accord or the Toyota Camry.

Optima Performance - 7.8 (Good)
The 2008 Kia Optima performs well, especially given its affordable price. Motor Trend says the Optima "does provide a pleasurable driving experience." Optima Exterior - 6.9 (Mediocre)
The Optima's exterior isn't likely to draw a crowd. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram says the sedan "has a more-interesting exterior than that of its rather boring predecessor, but styling still isn't quite cutting-edge like you get with, say, a Nissan Altima. But cutting-edge styling isn't Toyota or Honda's strength, either." Optima Interior - 7.6 (Good)

Optima Safety - 9.8 (Excellent)
The 2008 Kia Optima features plenty of standard crash protection equipment, including air bags all around.
