Based on analysis of 22 Sorento reviews and test drives.
Safety - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 Kia Sorento does extremely well in federal government crash tests. BusinessWeek calls the Sorento's safety "tip top."
The Sorento earns top five-star scores for both the driver and passenger in frontal crash tests. It gets another five stars for front- and rear-seat protection in side crash tests. The 2WD model gets a three-star rollover rating, while the 4WD model gets four stars. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2008 Sorento a top rating of "Good" in front offset tests. However, the Sorento gets the lowest possible rating of "Poor" in side impact tests -- a much lower score than other midsize SUVs. Interestingly enough, the Sorento fares much better than most others in its rear protection, for which it receives a top score of "Good."
Accident Avoidance
To help avoid crashes, all 2008 Sorentos come standard with four-wheel-disc anti-lock brakes, a tire-pressure monitoring system, active front head restraints, electronic stability control and traction control.
Crash Protection
The 2008 Kia Sorento earned top honors in front and rear side government crash tests. Its standard features include dual front advance air bags and full-length side-curtain air bags, a "worthwhile safety bonus," according to Kelley Blue Book. Under the steering wheel, a knee airbag helps prevent drivers from sliding under the seat belt in a frontal collision. In addition, an energy-absorbing steering column helps cushion the initial blow to the driver's chest.
