Exterior - What the Auto Press Says
The 2008 GX gets only acceptable marks for its exterior, based mainly on the fact that it hasn't been updated in a while.
As Kelley Blue Book says, "The GX 470 is a tall SUV with very Lexus-like styling...color-keyed wheel arches and side moldings help tone down the rugged truck-like exterior, as do the big headlamps and Lexus chrome grille."
Though the GX's exterior has not been recently redesigned, reviewers are generally pleased with the sum of its parts. Auto Mall USA describes how "details add visual richness" to the SUV, including "its peaky hood and grille combination, along with its nicely integrated body-colored bumpers, fender flares and side moldings. Massive headlamps and those complex, high-mounted tail lamps define its corners."
One particular feature that does not sit well with auto writers is the rear door. While Auto Mall USA is displeased because opening the rear door from the left is "awkward in the U.S., forcing you to walk around it when unloading curbside at the airport," U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman wishes the door swung up as opposed to left to right: "That can make it hard to open in a garage or other tight space."
With only one trim, the 2008 Lexus GX has five-spoke 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels and mud and snow tires that keep "a firm traction on the tarmac," according to The Auto Channel. Drivers have a Sports Package option for five-spoke 17-inch aluminum wheels with dark graphite finish along with smoked bezel headlamps and fog lamps, a dark graphite finished roof rack, dark tinted backup lens and a chrome exhaust tip.
