Lexus LX - What the Auto Press Says

The newly redesigned 2008 Lexus LX is a capable, luxurious and expensive SUV.

Along with its Toyota cousin, the Land Cruiser, the Lexus LX is a rugged, truck based SUV that boasts go-anywhere capabilities. Thos capabilities are married to a spacious and luxurious cabin that's stuffed full of technology to keep occupants happy and comfortable.  Reviewers are especially pleased with the LX's engine, which they say moves the large SUV along easily and allows for one of the best towing capacities in the class.  Beyond that, gadgets like adjustable ride height (which raises or lowers the LX for off-roading, or to make getting in and out easier) and quad-zone climate control are reviewer favorites.

Still, a number of reviewers wonder if there's a point to combining some of the best luxury and off-roading ability available today. Automobile Magazine says the LX "is still a big, heavy, off-road ready truck wearing a badge isn't equated with dirt unless the boys down at the car wash missed a spot. What's the point?" Many other reviewers echo that view and see the LX as a good choice for a very small slice of the population: wealthy people who routinely two heavy loads and venture well off road.  Other buyers, say many reviewers, should look elsewhere.

  • "The redesigned "Lexus Land Cruiser" still doesn't have quite the cachet of the Audi Q7, which will soon offer thrifty diesel power. Nor does it offer the in-your-face style of the Cadillac Escalade, which is adding a fuel-saving gas/electric hybrid version. In spite of this, LX 570 offers plenty of room, refinement, and luxury; laudable safety and performance features; and is highly capable off-road." -- Consumer Guide
  • "Buy the LX 570 if you're looking for a large and luxurious SUV that's off-road ready and relatively uncommon. Keep looking if a $74,000 slab-sided truck - albeit a well-equipped one - is not your idea of luxury; you're concerned with fuel consumption; you'll never go off-road."  -- Forbes
  • "It's the most refined and feature-packed model yet, as you might expect, but holds no big surprises. Lexus markets the truck as the ultimate combination of comfort and utility, but it's possible that's just a ploy to justify having a luxury SUV that's still truck-based." --
  • Cars.com
  • "Not your typical fullsize luxo-ute, the new LX is far more capable in the rough stuff than you'd imagine-and it'll make you look mighty good getting there, too." -- Four Wheeler

LX Performance - NA

The 2008 Lexus LX 570 has very good performance, according to reviewers.  Highlights include its off-roading capabilities and powerful 5.7 liter V8 engine. Edmunds says the LX is "exceptionally pleasant and so easy to drive that it could be a first choice as your daily driver. And if you happen to find yourself on some rock-strewn trail, well, the LX 570 will do you right there, too."  A full performance review is coming soon.

LX Exterior - NA

While most reviewers agree that the 2008 Lexus LX 570 is an attractive SUV, they also agree that it breaks no new ground in styling. Forbes says, "Not the most expressive SUV on the lot, [the LX's] exterior styling is statesman-like, exuding security and stability from every angle." LX Interior - NA

Given how capable the LX is  off roads, its sumptuous interior may surprise some buyers.  Still, reviewers say the interior is full of typically Lexus luxury and comfort. Automotive.com says, " "We may be known as guys who like to rough it in the great outdoors, and we aren't really happy unless we have dirt in our teeth, but we do appreciate the finer things in life and this vehicle fits right in." A full interior review is coming soon, but you can check out our 2008 Lexus LX 570 interior photos now. continue

LX Safety - NA

The 2008 Lexus LX 570 has not been rated in government or insurance industry crash tests. Reviewers, however, are impressed with the safety systems on the LX, including some incredibly advanced options. Forbes reports that the LX's Pre-Collision system "can anticipate when a crash is imminent and react accordingly. It will preemptively tighten the front seatbelts, prime the Brake Assist system for full stopping force, and even apply the brakes if the driver cannot react quickly enough."  A full safety review is coming soon. continue

LX Reliability - NA

The 2008 Lexus LX 570 is covered by a four-year/48,000 miles basic warranty and a five-year/70,000 miles power train warranty. continue
