Reliability

The 2008 Lincoln MKZ reliability score of 8.0 out of 10 is the Predicted Reliability rating provided by J.D. Power and Associates. This score is based on trending the past three years of historical initial quality and dependability data from J.D. Power's automotive studies, specifically the Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) and the Initial Quality Study (IQS).

Lincoln's comprehensive warranties should reassure any skeptical buyers: The basic warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles. The 2008 MKZ also comes with a powertrain warranty covering six years or 70,000 miles.

Reviewers generally estimate that the 2008 Lincoln MKZ will be reliable based on initial quality surveys and the excellent quality track record of its forerunner, the Lincoln Zephyr. But USA Today points out that "MKZ has a new engine, always a question mark on reliability no matter how thorough an automaker's testing."

According to the manufacturer, the MKZ's forerunner, the Lincoln Zephyr, is the company's best-quality vehicle based on warranty claims and in-house scoring -- giving high reliability expectations for the 2008 MKZ. But New Car Test Drive noted some variances in quality during a test drive. "One [vehicle] had prominently wide seams between hood and fenders," the reviewer says. "The doors slam with a resounding thud. Some will see this positive sound as a sign of quality, but the downside is that the doors require quite a bit of force to seal snugly."
